Current Initiatives
Overview
Boston LISC has invested in two major community-driven transit-oriented development efforts. The Fairmount Collaborative and The Jackson Square Partnership have both involved significant community engagement and articulation of a comprehensive vision of the future development of these areas. In early 2011, Boston LISC launched Resilient Communities/Resilient Families, a comprehensive community development initiative modeled on National LISC's Building Sustainable Communities effort.

The Fairmount Collaborative
The Fairmount Collaborative, comprised of four CDCs located along the Fairmount/Indigo MBTA line, offers real promise for a new approach community development. It is based on transit-oriented principles, strategic collaboration and a shared commitment to sustainable and equitable resident-led development. The collaborating CDCs have worked together to create a vision for new, urban villages on vacant, underutilized and brownfield sites along Boston’s most underused commuter rail line: a 9-mile corridor stretching from Hyde Park to South Station. The neighborhoods along the rail line have some of Boston’s highest poverty levels, the greatest dependence on public transportation, and the worst access to transit service. The CDCs’ plan calls for an enhanced rail line with new stations that will allow for higher-density affordable housing, better access to jobs, and a greenway linking parks and recreational destinations. Boston LISC has provided the Fairmount CDCs with $4,000,000 in grants, loans and lines of credit to support transit-oriented affordable housing and commercial development. Resilient Communities/Resilient Families
Through an initiative entited Resilient Communities/Resilient Families, Boston LISC will support comprehensive community development by funding resident-led community building initiatives in Codman Square/Four Corners, Mattapan, and the Warren Street Corridor in Roxbury. Our funding will support staff positions, planning consultants and early action grants. These resources will help build upon existing resident networks and identify new leaders to create and implement “quality of life plans”. These plans will create opportunities for individual residents to raise their incomes and build assets, and to gain access to quality education, health care, jobs, services, and recreational amenities.
